Rashad Ali Muhammad is a multidisciplinary artist who works in various mediums, including analog and digital collage, assemblage, design, painting, and non-narrative video. As a queer, gender-nonconforming person of the African diaspora, he resonates with the ability to deconstruct and reform reality — a method of thinking and creation that can counter society’s hierarchies and binaries. Muhammad uses unexpected found objects, organic shapes, patterns, and symbols as cultural signifiers to highlight the vast intersections shaping the human experience while creating space for healing and rejuvenation. No matter the medium, Muhammad's touchstone is honoring the inner child.

Abstract Faux Flower Petal Collages
Muhammad began creating faux flower petal collages during the COVID-19 quarantine. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and social upheaval, he needed something to center himself and escape the world’s chaos. That was the impetus for creating his abstract faux flower petal collage process and style. In this series, he dismantles artificial flower arrangements and rearranges the petals to create new, generative patterns. The meditative method of breaking down and rebuilding one piece at a time speaks to our ability to heal from trauma and see the world anew.
Portrait Collages
Muhammad assembles collages full of color and movement, often using mixed media to create patterns that rise off the paper. His combination of dynamic symbols of masculinity and femininity juxtaposed with soft and hard found objects bring powerful energy to each composition — resulting in figures at various stages of internal and interpersonal struggle, each on their journey toward self-actualization.
